What intrigues me about backyards is that they are both a public and private space, bound by perimeters and fences of varying effectiveness, in many cases leaving the space and its contents visible from a removed vantage point. More potent, however, are the psychological boundaries which prevent us from trespassing - the backyard as an extension of the home itself. A carefully measured and controlled space to interact with nature in the midst of a city, the promise of an idyllic suburban life.

Ongoing project.

Exhibited at the Sooner or Later group show, Vancouver, 2010.

Sustainability is a word that has been in our popular lexicon for over 30 years, so why is it that little has changed in that time? Re-Envisioning Ritual: A Culture At Odds With Sustainability takes new academic discourse that claims that it is our cultural values and beliefs that is creating the most resistance to a more sustainable life, not technology. Using ritualistic behaviour as a means to examine how cultural beliefs are enacted and reinforced, we analyzed how our current ritauals might be re-envisioned towards a sustainable future.

Illustrated, written, and designed in partnership with Michele Guimond

Livia Sweets focuses on sweet things baked, jarred or tempered using local ingredients where possible, with the ethos that fussiness does not make things taste better.

Custom apple-blossom typography - apple blossoms are edible, too!

Work also included customizing clients' existing blog, as well as social media brand consistency.

The Sphere Foundation is a non-profit organization centered around sustainability and social responsibility, to be launched this year. The branding required something that spoke to sustainability and humanitarian causes, but did not subscribe to current "greenwashing" conventions. After months of working with the founders, we arrived to a solution that approached it with a "nouveau-grassroots" look - that is, one that was neither "green" nor "social media" but that felt fresh, distinct, and could speak to our target early adopters - young, online, and compassionate.

In order to create new stories around sustainability, we need to move away from boxing it in with the environmentalism image of the 80's and 90's.

The Tiffin Project is a food-security initiative designed to align the city of Vancouver's restaurant industry with local farmers, through a focus on takeout waste. Tiffins are purchased through the Project, with part of the proceeds forming a subsidy for local farmers.

Branding workup required something simple enough to have engraved on the units. Infographics to help explain the project to potential customers, restaurants and farmers, as well as a simple site design were needed. Website design in collaboration with Mairin Deery.
